Think-Pair-Share
Purpose: To promote individual thinking, peer discussion, and whole-class sharing while ensuring all students have time to formulate ideas before contributing.
Materials:
Discussion question or prompt
Timer or stopwatch
Optional: whiteboard or chart paper for recording responses
Instructions:
Think (2-3 minutes): Pose a question or problem and ask students to think silently about their response. Students may write down their thoughts.
Pair (3-5 minutes): Students turn to a partner and share their ideas, discussing similarities and differences in their thinking.
Share (5-10 minutes): Selected pairs share their discussions with the whole class. Facilitate a broader conversation building on shared ideas.
Classroom Management:
Establish clear time limits for each phase
Use a signal (bell, timer, hand raise) to transition between phases
Assign or allow students to choose partners strategically
Monitor pairs during discussion and provide prompts if needed
Differentiation:
For struggling learners: Provide sentence stems or question starters; pair with supportive peers
For advanced learners: Pose more complex questions; ask them to generate follow-up questions
For English language learners: Allow extra think time; provide vocabulary support; permit responses in native language first
Extensions:
Square: After pair sharing, have two pairs form a group of four to further discuss and refine ideas
Written reflection: Ask students to write a summary of their learning after the share phase
Gallery walk: Have pairs create visual representations of their discussions to share with the class
