  • 5th Grade: TEKS 5.9(D)(ii) - Use multiple text features to locate information and gain an overview of contents

Materials: Informational texts (textbooks, magazines, nonfiction books), scavenger hunt checklist

Duration: 20 minutes

Activity:

  • Review common text features: headings, captions, bold words, diagrams, glossary, index, table of contents

  • Give students a checklist of text features to find

  • Students work in pairs to find examples in their books

  • For each feature found, students write how it helps them understand the text

  • Share findings as a class

Assessment: Students complete the scavenger hunt checklist with explanations of how each feature aids comprehension
