Materials: Short text or picture book, inference chart

Duration: 20 minutes

Activity:

• Introduce the formula: Text Clues + What I Know = Inference

• Read a passage that requires students to "read between the lines"

• Model making an inference using the formula

• Students work in pairs to make 2-3 inferences from the text

• Share inferences as a class and discuss supporting evidence

Assessment: Students complete an inference chart showing text clues, background knowledge, and their inference
