• 5th Grade: TEKS 5.3(B) - Use context within and beyond a sentence to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words

Materials: Whiteboard/chart paper, any grade-level text

Duration: 15-20 minutes

Activity:

• Choose 3-5 challenging vocabulary words from a text students are reading

• Write sentences containing these words on the board

• Model how to use context clues (words around the unknown word) to figure out meaning

• Students work in pairs to determine the meaning of each word using context

• Discuss as a class and verify meanings

Assessment: Students write their own sentence using one of the vocabulary words correctly
