Materials: Any narrative text, graphic organizer

Duration: 20 minutes

Activity:

• Teach the "Somebody Wanted But So Then" summarizing strategy

• Somebody = character, Wanted = goal, But = conflict, So = action taken, Then = resolution

• Model using a familiar story (e.g., "The Three Little Pigs")

• Students read a new story and complete the graphic organizer

• Students use their organizer to write a 3-4 sentence summary
