Jigsaw Method

Purpose: To make students responsible for teaching content to their peers, promoting both individual accountability and interdependence.

Materials:

  • Content divided into distinct segments (readings, topics, or concepts)

  • Graphic organizers or note-taking templates

  • Expert group discussion guides

  • Home group teaching guidelines

Instructions:

  1. Form Home Groups: Divide the class into heterogeneous groups of 4-6 students.

  2. Assign Topics: Give each student in the home group a different segment of the material to study.

  3. Create Expert Groups: Students with the same topic meet in expert groups to study their material, discuss key concepts, and plan how to teach it.

  4. Return to Home Groups: Students return to their home groups and take turns teaching their segment to group members.

  5. Synthesize Learning: Home groups complete an activity that requires integration of all segments.

Classroom Management:

  • Create clear role descriptions for expert and home groups

  • Post time limits for each phase prominently

  • Provide structured templates to guide expert group preparation

  • Circulate among groups to monitor understanding and engagement

  • Have a backup plan for absent students

Differentiation:

  • For struggling learners: Assign less complex segments; provide additional resources or pre-teaching

  • For advanced learners: Assign more challenging segments; ask them to make connections across topics

  • For diverse learners: Offer materials in multiple formats (text, video, audio); allow choice in presentation method

Extensions:

  • Assessment: Create individual quizzes covering all segments to ensure individual accountability

  • Cross-group presentations: Have expert groups present to the whole class

  • Application projects: Require home groups to create a product that applies all segments of learning
