Lesson 8: Author's Purpose Game 🎯

  • 3rd Grade: TEKS 3.10(C) - Explain the author's purpose and message within a text

  • 4th Grade: TEKS 4.10(C) - Explain the author's purpose and message within a text

  • 5th Grade: TEKS 5.10(C) - Explain the author's purpose and message within a text

Materials: Various text types (advertisement, recipe, story, article, poem), index cards

Duration: 15-20 minutes

Activity:

  • Review the three main author's purposes: Persuade, Inform, Entertain (PIE)

  • Show different text examples and have students identify the purpose

  • Create "PIE" stations around the room

  • Give each student a text card and have them move to the correct station

  • Students discuss with their group why their texts fit that purpose

Assessment: Students explain in writing why their assigned text fits its particular purpose
